Information about October 27th meeting
The meeting was held at The International Trade Club located at 250 Water Street in Mobile, Alabama.
Keith Vaughan, President, called the meeting to order at 11:00.
- The Officers and Board Members were introduced
- Bill Evans introduced M.D. Smith who spoke about the web site and information on it.
- Secretary Susan Barrow gave a report of membership
- Bill Barnhill, Treasurer gave a financial report
- Heath Mulkey of Compass Building Systems in Georgia (and a member of the Georgia Self Storage Association) gave a talk about the costs of steel rising, but still not affecting overall storage building prices. He said the range would be in the area of 20% and that steel prices were coming back down a little.
- Charles Johnson of Universal Self Storage spoke on a number of topics and handed out a packet of information discussing the FBI's warning about terrorists using self storage facilities and what we should be on the watch for. He also said most courts were finding that up to $20 or 20% of a month's rent were considered OK for late fees.
- All current members of ALSSA will try to spread the word and build our association so that we can have a voice in Montgomery regarding legislation that may affect us as a group and possibly prevent something that happened in Arkansas where a sales tax was added with no one having much power to say anything about it. They did not have a state association at the time.
